Online Resources

For our volunteers who are teaching and tutoring, we've compiled a list of helpful websites, books and ideas to add to your bag of tricks. We will update this page as we find more helpful resources for you to use.

ESOL
This site includes worksheets, activities, games, and lesson plans. You do have to sign-in and register to retrive most information on this site. This site also includes videos for teachers to access that gives more information about teaching adult learners.
This is a great site for both teachers and tutors! This site provides educators with ice breakers, worksheets, grammar activities to use with students. It also lists professional development websites.
This site provides a plethora of different subjects and types of learning activities, quizzes, and grammar worksheets for teachers and tutors to use with their ESOL learners.
This site is very comprehensive. ESL Gold provides teachers and tutors with activities that touch on all four learning skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This particular site is geared towards both teachers/tutors and students.
This site has lots of resources for teachers and tutors alike. The Lanternfish site  has lesson plans, games, worksheets, activities, flashcards, and much more to use in the classroom or one-on-one instruction.
This site is good for teachers/tutors who want to integrate media (i.e. YouTube videos) in their lessons. Specifically this site emphasizes the listening comprehension learning skill.
This site, founded by the Minnesota Literacy Council, provides great insight on tutor tips and creative, constructive ideas to use with both ESOL and GED students.
This is a great website for both tutors/teachers and students. It provides great activities for learners who are developing their writing skill. This site is most appropriate for high intermediate and advanced ESOL learners and ABE students.
This is a fantastic source for teachers/tutors and students! This site highlights the writing learning skill, providing great activities, lesson plans, guides, and collections!
This site provides lesson plans, quizzes, and games for teachers and tutors to use in the classroom or in one-on-one instruction.
This site has numerous amounts of  teacher resources that includes PDF downloadable lesson plans and grammar activities.
This site is a great resource, that provides real life scenarios, for students to access. It provides learners with Reading, Writing, Math, English, vocabulary, and U.S. Citizenship assistance. This site also provides learners with tips on how to prepare for tests.
"We Are New York" is a web series that provides English language learners with real life scenarios. Each "We Are New York" episode features exercises to help learners practice and improve upon their English skills.
This is a great website with free, downloadable worksheets to use with ESOL student(s). The worksheets are primarily grammar based exercises.
This site provides many writing prompts for teachers or tutors to use with their learners, as a part of the writing stage of the lesson.
This is a fantastic source to use with intermediate and advanced ESOL students! This site provides teachers and tutors with reading, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking activities. This site is also great for real-life type of scenarios that many ESOL learners relate to.
This site has great worksheets, games, and ideas to use with ESOL learners.
Need something extra to get your students talking? Use the The Internet TESL Journal's page that lists hundreds of discussion questions on a wide variety of topics.
For those of you who are feeling less than confident in creating a  lesson plan from scratch, North Carolina's community colleges have posted comprehensive lessons on numerous topics that are important for adult students.
At this New American Horizons site you can view videos of actual ESL teachers in the classroom and gain insight from a first-hand perspective.
A great site for speaking activities. It lists many easy, low prep class activities, how much time they should last, and has them organized by theme.
Arlington County's Education and Employment Program (REEP) is a valuable resource for ESL instructors. Hear student stories that combine listening, reading and vocabulary skills with themes centered on health, family and work.
Voice of America's website has a special section for those who are learning English. Find news articles with audio included for students to practice listening skills. Recommended for intermediate or advanced learners.
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
A quick and free registration with CASAS provides thorough lesson plans for lower level learners with topics such as "Get and Hold the Job You Want" and "Getting to Know Your Doctor."
This site is a host for resources such as reading assessments and lesson plans on reading, writing, math and more.
The title says it all. This site has interactive activities, handouts and presentations all about grammar presented in a fun way.
This site provides many writing prompts for teachers or tutors to use with their learners, as a part of the writing stage of the lesson.
GED
This is a great website for GED instructors and learners! This site provides downloadable worksheets for the math portion of the test and provides GED help for all four sections of the test: reading, writing, math, and history.
Citizenship
All you need to know about the naturalization process straight from the agency who conducts the test. Learn about eligibility, the format of the test, and helpful study tools such as downloadable lesson plans.

ABE/ESOL Books
This books includes a wealth of vocabulary on many subjects with full color pictures and helpful ideas for how to practice the new words.
Follow the story of Sam and Pat. This books series works with improving skills in phonics, vocabulary, oral reading and more with an easy-to-use, context-based approach. This book is available to borrow from our LLC library.
